File Transfer Protocol
Transferring your files to your Web server is not as difficult as it was just a few years ago. Modern FTP (File Transfer Protocol) software has made it very easy to manage your Web site files. We support technical answers for Fetch and Transmit for Macintosh PC's, and CuteFTP for Windows PC's.
Uploading your Web pages to your server using
WS_FTP or CuteFTP.
-
Connect to your Internet Service Provider ( AOL, Earthlink, MSN, etc.)
-
Start the program called WS_FTP or CuteFTP.
-
For Hostname enter yourserver.xxx
-
For Host Type set it to Automatic.
-
Enter your username in the User ID box (you were given this when you signed up)
-
Enter your password in the Password box. (you were given this when you signed up)
-
Make the initial directory: 'www' without the quotes.
-
Click OK.
-
The files and directories on the left side of the screen are on your computer. The files and directories on the right hand are on the JF Designs system.
This is your home directory on our system.
-
Change to the proper directory on your computer where your Web pages are stored.
-
Now you can transfer your files to our system simply by double-clicking on those files you want to transfer.
-
Now you need to make sure that you call your home page index.html, or index.htm on our system.
Also make sure it is all lowercase.
You can rename your homepage on our system by clicking once on it on our system and then choosing the rename button to the right of it.
Uploading your Web pages to your server
using the Fetch program for Macintosh.
-
Connect to your Internet Service Provider ( AOL, Earthlink, MSN, etc.)
-
Open up Fetch and click on the 'Open Connection' button.
-
For Hostname enter yourserver.xxx
-
Enter your username for User ID. (you were given this when you signed up)
-
Enter your password for Password. (you were given this when you signed up)
-
Make the initial directory: 'www' without the quotes.
-
Click on OK.
-
You will see some directories show up in the window. Leave those directories alone. They are system files. This area you are in is your root directory. In here you will put your index.htm file, (home page). You can also create and delete directories.
-
Now Click on the 'Put File...' button. (You can also just drag any files on this open window. They will be copied into your server as well.)
-
You will need to go to the directory where your pages are stored.
-
Now just double click on your home page and you will see a box that asks you what you want to call the file on our system. Call your home page index.html, or index.htm and you can call your other pages whatever you like.
-
Under Format choose 'Raw Data'.
-
Now click on the OK button to transfer the file.
-
Follow steps 10 - 14 for each file you want to upload.
